Dogs have been part of the Borrowdale story since 1866, so muddy paws are expected here, not frowned upon. The three-night New Year break starts on 30 December with a mulled wine hour, a four-course welcome dinner and prize bingo. On New Year’s Eve there is a guided walk (weather permitting), a six-course dinner with a traditional piper, then a DJ and disco and a glass of bubbly at midnight. New Year’s Day ends with marshmallows toasted round the fire in the garden. Your dog can join you in the lounge and the conservatory.

King’s Lynn, Norfolk

On the edge of the Sandringham Estate, Congham Hall’s three-night, all-inclusive New Year package starts on 30 December, with a black-tie gala dinner on New Year’s Eve, fireworks and dancing until 1am. Dogs stay in the ground-floor Garden Rooms around the spa garden, each with its own terrace, and are welcome in the library, the bar and out on the bar terrace.
