Bwlch Pen Barras, Mold, Flintshire, CH7 5SH
Visit WebsiteBoasting scenic landscapes, spectacular summits and pretty towns and villages from Prestatyn to Llangollen, The Clwydian Range – one of Wales’ five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty – is a dog owner’s dream day out. There are so many beautiful trails that you can follow but the Jubilee Tower Circular Trail to the top of Moel Famau (‘Mother Mountain’ in English) is definitely a favourite.
Overview
Moel Famau sits in the middle of the Clwydian Range and, as it’s the highest summit (554 metres), it offers amazing views every which way you turn, from Snowdonia to Liverpool and across the Cheshire Plain.
The local junior schools tend to take children on trips to the top so while a hearty climb – just shy of two miles – we’d most definitely rate it as child as well as dog friendly. Dogs can be off lead but you’re likely to spot a few sheep along your walk so keep an eye out if you have a playful pup.
At a leisurely pace, you can reach the summit in an hour from the Bwlch Pen Barras car park. Pack a picnic if you want to sit awhile to admire the views (beautiful in all four seasons) or head to the nearby Loggerheads Country Park once you’ve completed your descent and treat yourself to a much-deserved ice cream. They serve doggy versions, too.
For The Dogs
Bring leads, poop bags and water.
Opening Hours
While daylight hours are recommended, sunrises and sunsets at Moel Famau are spectacular.
Parking
The car park is open from 8am – 9pm in summer and from 8am – 6pm in winter.
If you’re holidaying near Moel Famau or even heading to this popular country park for a day out, you’re spoilt for choice for other incredible places to visit. If you want to be close to the coast, Llandudno and Conway are just over 40 miles away and both boast beautiful walks and colourful streets to explore. Alternatively, over the border, you’ll find the historic city of Chester with a plethora of dog friendly eateries. Why not take your pup on a scenic walk along Chester City Walls?
