Overview

While the ancient streets of Chester are often filled with enthusiastic shoppers, our favourite way to eek out a little bit of peace and quiet for our pups, and also to explore some of the hidden corners of Chester, is to walk the walls.

Chester is the only city in Britain to retain the full circuit of its defensive walls, parts of which are almost 2,000 years old. The city walls walk crosses roads at the four main medieval gates known as Northgate, Bridgegate, Eastgate, and Watergate, and passes by many more medieval structures. Approximately 3 km in length, it takes around one hour to complete, and you’ll find information points along the way.

Our top tip is to leave the walls at Bell Tower Walk close to Chester Cathedral and pop to Chester Market for a drink and a bite to eat. It’s wonderfully dog friendly and is also home to one of our favourite doggy traders, Digby & Champ. Nibble on something delicious and stock up on treats for your pooch before heading back to the walls to finish your walk.

For The Dogs

Bring leads and poop bags. You’ll find little bowls of water outside of many of the city’s shops and restaurants.

Opening Hours

There are no opening hours as such, but it’s always nicer to amble along the walls in good weather. Golden hour, as the sun is setting, is particularly lovely.

Parking

Park at Chester Racecourse, New Crane Street, Chester, CH1 4JH. Charges apply. Start your circuit at City Walls Road, a minute’s walk away from the car park.

The Area

With its beautiful architecture, unique history and welcoming atmosphere, Chester is not only loved by locals, it’s one of the UK’s most popular cities for a memorable day out or a short break. There’s so much to see and do within the city walls but if you want to avoid the busier spots, head over the suspension bridge and walk down the south side of the River Dee to the Meadows. It’s a touch more tranquil and very popular with wildlife lovers and dog walkers.
