Visit WebsiteStanding proud overlooking the surrounding countryside, Kit Hill Country Park marks the highest point in the Tamar Valley. At 334 metres, it’s one of only five Marilyns in all of Cornwall, and was given to Cornwall Council on behalf of the people of Cornwall by Prince Charles in 1985 to mark the birth of his son, Prince William.
Overview
With over 400 acres of beautiful heathland to explore, the park makes for the most perfect dog friendly day out, especially as dogs are able to roam off lead for the majority of the walk. Climb to the summit and enjoy wonderful vistas in all directions over the Tamar Valley AONB. You’ll notice the stack of South Kit Hill Mine near the top, which was worked from 1856 to 1884 mining deposits of tin, copper, arsenic and wolfram.
At the summit, the three viewing tables will help you identify key points of interest across the surrounding countryside. We’d highly recommend visiting around sunset for the most spectacular golden hour views across Cornwall and over to Devon.
If you prefer to follow a set route around Kit Hill Country Park, there is a two-hour circular walk waymarked by distinctive granite posts. However, as Kit Hill is located on access land, you may simply want to let your four-legged friend explore the network of footpaths at their leisure. Head north of the summit and down to Kit Hill quarry for dogs to have a splash around. It’s the perfect place to cool down on a warm day.
If you’ve worked up an appetite, just a few minutes from the car park you’ll find Louis Tea Rooms. Order the Cornish cream tea and sit and enjoy the stunning views across Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor.
For The Dogs
Dogs are able to roam off lead for the majority of the walk, but keep an eye out for livestock.
Opening Hours
None as such but daylight hours recommended.
Parking
It’s free to park in the main car park. Use the postcode PL17 8HW.
A 30-minute drive from Kit Hill, you’ll find Golitha Falls (pronounced Gol-eye-tha). A series of cascades and waterfalls along a section of the River Fowey as it makes its way through the ancient oak woodland of Draynes Wood, we definitely recommend visiting with your four-legged friend. The woodland itself is utterly enchanting and makes for a perfect dog walk in picturesque surroundings. Stop by Inkie’s Smokehouse for a bite to eat while you’re there.
