Overview
It’s easy to be drawn to the stunning coastline when visiting Cornwall, but head inland and you’ll be rewarded with some really special places that are absolutely worth tearing yourself away from the beach for.
Golitha Falls (pronounced Gol-eye-tha) are a series of cascades and waterfalls along a section of the River Fowey as it makes its way through the ancient oak woodland of Draynes Wood. The woodland itself is utterly enchanting and makes for a perfect dog walk in picturesque surroundings.
Over 120 moss species and more than 50 different kinds of liverwort grow in the reserve. Fallen trees are coated with moss, liverwort and lichen, which also covers the many boulders in the river to create the most magical atmosphere. You’ll also be struck by how often the nature changes along the course of the falls, from open glades to a high-walled gorge.
There are several marked routes through the reserve, though it’s easy enough to choose your own path if you amble alongside the river and turn back when you’re ready. In the summer this is the perfect spot to cool down and paddle in the calmer shallows, but it can get rather muddy in the winter so it’s worth remembering your wellies.
Perhaps one of the reasons Golitha Falls is such a favourite amongst locals and visitors alike, is not just for the beautiful walks, but also its proximity to the legendary Inkie’s Smokehouse. The parking for this walk is right next to Inkie’s, so do make sure to pop in before or after your walk for a (very large) lunch to remember.
For The Dogs
Dogs will enjoy exploring the woodland off lead all year round, though there are some sections of fast-flowing river which we recommend taking extra care around.

The Area
Just a few miles from Golitha Falls and perched on Bodmin Moor lies one of the most iconic sites in Cornwall: the thirty-two foot high Cheesewring made up of seven slabs of rock. On a clear day, the views over Cornwall and Devon from the top are spectacular. Follow the circular walk from Minions taking in the Cheesewring and the Hurlers for a lovely day out. Do bear in mind that by law, all dogs have to be on short lead between 1st March and 31st July to protect the ground nesting birds.
