Birchover Stone, Main Street, Birchover, Matlock, Derbyshire, DE4 2BN, UK
This circular 3.6 km walk around Stanton Moor and up to the Nine Ladies Circle encompasses panoramic views, leafy woodlands and even a trig point. With relatively flat footpaths and a short but sweet distance, it’s a route that’s perfect for all members of the family no matter the age – and both two and four-legged alike!
Overview
The walk begins by following a short section of rocky footpath from the road up to a large cork-shaped stone (the first of many feature points on this beautiful walk). Bearing left, follow the path through the vast heather moorland, steadily making your way towards the enchanting woodlands in the distance. If you look to the right, you’ll see the trig point overlooking the gorgeous Derbyshire Dales countryside.
Once you reach the woodland, stay on the footpath to the right which leads you to the mysterious Nine Ladies Circle. This stone circle dates back to the early Bronze Age and is believed to depict nine ladies turned to stone as a penalty for dancing on a Sunday. While eerie-sounding, it’s a really nice spot to stop for a drink or a picnic, if you have the time.
Next, take the footpath around to the right to return to the heather moorland. You’ll once again be met with stunning views so make sure you have your camera ready. After a short distance, you’ll arrive back at the Cork Stone where you can then retrace your footsteps back to your car.
For The Dogs
You may spot some sheep here and there so do keep your pup on a lead if they are a playful sort. There’s still plenty for them to see and sniff so we don’t think they’ll mind too much.
Opening Hours
Stanton Moor is accessible all year round.
Parking
There is a small lay-by at the start of the walk where you can park for free. Alternatively, head to the larger car park a little further down the road (approx. 300 metres).
The Peak District National Park is a joyful place for pups with an adventure at every turn. We love the Stepping Stones at Dovedale, particularly the National Trust walk that starts at Ilam Park and ends at the The River Dove. It’s a three mile return trip so great for a short walk with your four-legged friend. Pack a picnic to enjoy when you reach the Stepping Stones. The scenery is stunning.
