Mam Tor & The Great Ridge

one of the most famous walks in the Peak District

Buxton Road, Castleton, Hope Valley, Derbyshire, S33 8WN

With spectacular 360 degree views over the surrounding area, Mam Tor should definitely be on your Peak District must-visit list. We particularly love the route from Castleton that incorporates Treak Cliff Cavern, Lose Hill and the Great Ridge.

Good to know

Overview

The walk starts in the beautiful village of Castleton before a steep ascent to the peak of Mam Tor, then it’s a breathtaking 3 km ridge walk to Lose Hill before looping back into Castleton.

If you have time, we recommend stopping by the dog friendly Treak Cliff Cavern on your way up to the peak for a tour of the caves deep beneath the mountain. Famous for its large deposits of Blue John stone, it’s home to some of the most stunning cave formations found in the UK.

In total, this dog walk is 6.5 miles long so allow a few hours to complete it, but make sure to stop in Castleton before or after to try out one of the many cafés or pubs. It’s such a picturesque village and very quintessentially ‘Peak District’. Tilly’s of Castleton is a favourite of ours for a late breakfast – expect the longest list of Welsh rarebit and loose leaf teas that you’ve ever seen. You’ll definitely be set up for an action-packed day ahead.

If a dog friendly pub is more for you, try The Castle. It’s perfect for a post-walk pint. Muddy walking boots are welcomed and almost every table in the pub has pooches by their side. The pub is fully stocked with treats and there’s even doggy beer behind the bar. We give it a 10/10 for dog friendliness.

For The Dogs

Watch out for sheep!

Opening Hours

There are no opening hours as such, but this is understandably a popular walk so get there early to make sure you get a parking space.

Parking

Use the pay and display car park at Castleton visitor centre (S33 8WN) or for a shorter walk just to the peak, park at the National Trust car park closer to Mam Tor (S33 8WA).

The Area

While you’re in the area, make sure to take a trip up to Bamford Edge for one of our all time favourite views over Ladybower Reservoir and the Hope Valley. The gritstone rock formations that you see on Bamford Edge are part of a series of edges that stretch for miles across the Peak District. We love the 5 mile loop from Bamford Village which takes you up to the edge then down to the reservoir before following the river back to the village. There’s a lovely community run pub/café/post office called the Angler’s Rest in Bamford which is well worth visiting at the beginning or end of your walk.
