Upper Hulme, Leek, Staffordshire, ST13 8UB
Visit WebsiteThis three hour loop starts with a short climb through woodland up onto a ridge offering 360º of incredible views over the Peak District. With beautiful rock formations and the mysterious Doxey Pool (which a mermaid is rumoured to call home, would you believe), it’s the perfect place to admire the landscape and let your furry friend take a short dip if the weather is warm.
Overview
Once you’ve walked along the ridge, you’ll come to a small country road that you need to cross over into the fields opposite. Follow this path for another 15-20 minutes until you spot a sign post for Lud’s Church. At this point, turn right down the well-trodden path towards the woodland.
If you follow the sign posts around to the left, you’ll soon come to a drop. Walk slowly down the stone steps and you’ll be greeted by the most amazing sight – the moss-covered chasm known as Lud’s Church. While a mere 100 metres long, you’ll want to amble through it slowly to really take in the uniqueness of it all.
Next, circle back around into the forest. If you take a right and follow the path, you’ll eventually find yourself in the fields where you first crossed over from The Roaches ridge. You can then decide if you want to go back over the ridge or would prefer to walk down the country road and return to your car.
If you’re heading to The Roaches on a weekend, take some pennies to spend at the ice cream van parked on the road between The Roaches and Lud’s Church.
For The Dogs
Bring leads, water and poop bags.
Opening Hours
You can access The Roaches all year round but if visiting on a weekend, we’d recommend arriving before 9am as any later and you may struggle for a parking spot.
Parking
Parking is free in the lay-by next to The Roaches but please be aware that it does get busy.
The Peak District National Park is one big playground for pups with walks and adventures at every turn. The Stepping Stones at Dovedale are a favourite dog friendly destination of ours and we love the National Trust walk that starts at Ilam Park and ends at the The River Dove at the base of Thorpe Cloud. It’s three miles there and back so perfect for a comfortable walk with your four-legged friend with lots to see and sniff along the way. Pack a picnic or some snacks to enjoy when you reach the Stepping Stones. The scenery is breathtaking.
