Visit Website

The Priory is nestled within the historic town of Caerleon on the River Usk. Founded by Hywel ap Iorwerth, a Welsh prince, and dating back to 1180, this now welcoming dog friendly hotel started life as a Cistercian monastery. Many of the original features have been retained and sit seamlessly alongside more modern additions.

For dogs...

The beautiful dog friendly cottage rooms all have their very own semi-private gardens, meaning that canine companions are seconds away from the great outdoors.

As well as a bed, bowls and a towel, all doggy guests receive a special welcome gift box.

If you find yourself short of supplies, the hotel has its very own bodega selling some lovely little bits and pieces for pampered pooches.

For humans...

Breakfast is included in the room rate and is definitely worth setting your alarm and getting up for.

With a menu that focuses on seasonal produce with a Spanish influence (a nod to the owners, the Martinez family), expect an array of delicious dishes served with flair.

If the sun is shining, drinks on the terrace are a must. It’s such a nice spot to enjoy a tipple or two.

Good to know

Overview

Upon arrival at The Priory, you’ll be allocated one of the beautiful dog friendly cottage rooms which have their very own semi-private gardens. The bedrooms feature chic interiors, incredible comfy beds and luxurious ensuites. The hotel happily welcomes up to two canine companions per room.

While dogs are not permitted in the main restaurant, they can join you in the indoor bar area and outside on the terrace. We particularly love The Priory’s ‘counter concept’ where guests are invited to browse the glass-fronted display and pick their favourite cut of meat or fish. There’s a fantastic selection of wines to choose from too.

The Priory stands in one ace of private grounds that pups can happily sniff their way round, as long as they remain on their lead. For longer walks, we recommend heading to nearby Beechwood Park. Once the private residence of George Fothergill, a tobacco manufacturer and former Mayor of Newport, the 30 acres of mature trees, open spaces and play areas, are now open to the public every day.

The Area

Before you head further afield, stroll around Caerleon and discover its Roman heritage. Caerleon amphitheatre is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the UK, and it’s dog friendly. The structure was built in 90 AD and was maintained until its abandonment in the 3rd century. It’s free to enter and four-legged friends are welcome to sniff their way around the site while you soak up the history.
