Overview

Tenby is one of Pembrokeshire’s crown jewels, promising a fun filled adventure for you and your dog with its mix of stunning beaches, woodland trails and thriving town centre that caters excellently for dogs. One of the highlights is the Pembrokeshire Coast Path which runs through Tenby itself, offering spectacular views over Carmarthen Bay. A slightly shorter walk includes heading south towards Lydstep and Giltar Point which has open grassy paths and provides sensational views across to Caldey Island.

A short climb up to Castle Hill, the highest point in Tenby, is definitely worth it and has one or two optimal photo opportunities for you and your dog. If you’re wanting to get off the beaten track then head away from town to discover Allen’s View, a secluded part of the coastline where some beautiful coves are waiting to be discovered. We recommend walking boots for this one though given the unevenness of the paths.

Our recommended best walk however starts in the neighbouring town of Penally. Park at Penally train station and work your way through the duney path that runs through Tenby Golf Club and connects to the very end of Tenby South Beach. From there your dog has free rein of the South Beach (whilst heading towards Tenby town centre) and can run till their heart’s content on soft sand or splooshing through the calm water.

For The Dogs

Between 1 May and 30 September dogs are banned from Tenby North Beach, and parts of Castle Beach and South Beach are dog-free or lead-only. Signs and maps at each beach show where dogs can go. From 1 October dogs are welcome back on the sand.

Check the Pembrokeshire County Council beach restrictions before you set off.

Dogs are welcome on Caldey Island but must be kept on a lead.

Parking

For the walk from Penally, park at Penally train station and follow the path through the dunes to the far end of South Beach.

Our Tips

Be mindful of the beaches that have seasonal dog access. North Beach for example is dog friendly during Autumn and Winter months only whereas South Beach is generally dog friendly all year round.

Tenby has an abundance of holiday cottages and Airbnb rentals suitable for you and your dog. We recommend the Imperial Hotel which backs onto Tenby’s Esplanade. Very accommodating for dogs, nightly prices are more than reasonable and your dog is welcome in all areas.

If you’re in Tenby for more than a day, trips to St Catherine’s Island (filming location for BBC’s Sherlock production) and Caldey Island to see puffins and seals via the regular ferry are well worth doing. Both accommodate for dogs and add that extra sprinkle of nature and history to your trip.

You haven’t experienced Tenby until you’ve had fresh crab or lobster from the Simply Seafood shack down by the harbour. Your dog can even enjoy a prawn or two, but be mindful of the resident seagulls who will be loitering to steal any leftovers if you’re not watching.

Tenby can be great for dogs that are sociable or equally for dogs that prefer a quieter scene. We recommend visiting in the winter for those furry friends that enjoy the slower pace and we would recommend avoiding Ironman weekend (usually mid September) unless you want to experience a busy yet inspirational event.
