Visit WebsiteThe Stiperstones is a relatively hidden Shropshire gem when compared to its more popular, and easier to climb, neighbour, The Long Mynd. While sometimes a scramble to reach the trig point at the top, believe us, it's well worth it for the spectacular views.
Overview
Shropshire’s Stiperstones National Nature Reserve offers the perfect mix of natural beauty and rugged charm. With its striking quartzite ridge and abundant wildlife, it makes for a challenging but rewarding dog walk, whichever route you choose to take.
It’s an easy to moderate walk to the top, starting off on grass but getting increasingly rocky. Good footwear is essential as the ground is somewhat uneven, but it’s a gentle hike after the initial walk up.
The trig point for Stiperstones can be found at Manstone Rock. Fairly tricky to get to, it does require a bit of a scramble, so unless your pooch is an accomplished climber, it’s best to admire it from the ground.
The Stiperstone Inn is a great place for a mid hike break, especially if you’ve chosen to extend your walk and make a day of it. Dogs are welcome to drink or dine with you in the bar or outside in the beer garden.
For The Dogs
There are sheep grazing all year round so four-legged friends will need to be kept under close control or on leads at all times.
Opening Hours
There are no opening hours as such; go from dawn until dusk.
Parking
Park at Knolls car park, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY5 0NL.
If you have a head for heights, drive up the Bur Way from Church Stretton, a treacherously steep (up to 20% incline in some parts) and narrow road that snakes up to the vast plateau of the Long Mynd. There are plenty of parking spots up on the top. Get out and take a stroll amongst the heather with your pooch. This road also avoids the steep walk up from the bottom of the valley. It’s a designated Dark Sky Discovery Site, with views of the Milky Way on clear nights.
