Overview

A popular resort during the Victorian times, families would flock here for their summer holiday. Saltburn (as it is commonly referred to) still retains so much of its original charm, it’s hard not to imagine that you have travelled back to that era.

Travel in true Victorian style on The Saltburn Cliff Tramway, the oldest water balanced funicular in the country. As you ride down 37 metres of cliff, the traditionally dressed operator will share lots of interesting facts about the history of the tramway and how it functions. Dogs are welcome to join you and travel for free. Once at the bottom, stroll along the only remaining pleasure pier on the whole North East and Yorkshire coast. It’s the perfect place to pick up and eat your fish and chips.

During the summer months, like most beaches, restrictions apply on Saltburn-by-the-Sea Beach. Dogs are welcome to the right of the pier, giving them ample room to explore, run around and swim. During the winter months however, it’s a dog’s paradise, as they can enjoy the entire award-winning beach.

Along the promenade you’ll find a row of colourful beach huts. If you’re planning a full day spent with family, Marshalls Beach Huts are available to hire on a daily basis and are dog friendly too.

Once you’ve had your fill of fresh sea air, why not stroll into the town where you’ll find plenty of dog friendly cafés and eateries. We recommend a sweet treat from Signals which serves breakfast, lunch, brunch and delicious homemade cakes.

For The Dogs

Take leads, towels and poop bags, and fresh water on warmer days.

Opening Hours

Check the tide times before you go if you want to enjoy the beach at low tide.

Parking

You’ll find a variety of pay and display car parks in Saltburn-by-the-Sea.

The Area

Just a short stroll from the town you will find Saltburn Valley Gardens. During the 18th century, local smugglers used the network of tracks through the woods but today you are presented with a colourful display of wildflowers, insect hotels and murals. There are various circular walks available here and a tearoom for a convenient coffee break. We also recommend walking along part of The Cleveland Way. Starting in the market town of Helmsley, this 109-mile walking route takes you through the beautiful landscapes of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park before reaching Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
