Sale Fell

a family-friendly Wainwright with amazing veiws

Wythop, Cumbria, CA13 9YW

Visit Website

At a diminutive 359 metres, Sale Fell is one of the smallest Lakeland fells, and perches on the north western fringes of the Lake District where craggy hills begin to give way to rolling countryside and coastal breezes. Its tiny height and family-friendly gradients make this Wainwright a perfect option for introducing children (or young dogs) to fell walking.

Overview

Park by St. Margaret’s Church at Wythop and follow the straight forward route described by the Keswick Tourism Association. At a steady pace this route takes as little as two hours, but we recommend packing a flask of hot chocolate and taking the time to enjoy the view from the summit.

For such a small fell, there is in no way a trade off in terms of views. You are rewarded for your efforts with a panorama over Bassenthwaite Lake and the Skiddaw Range, as well as the entire Helvellyn range stretching out in the East. On a clear day you can even see as far as the Isle of Man and across the Solway Firth to Scotland!

Sale Fell is a great choice for a winter wander, when daylight is in short supply and the higher fells are often dusted with snow. Tackling a lower fell means you get to enjoy the spectacle of the snowy hills in the distance, without having to worry about technical winter walking requiring crampons and ice axes (always check the weather forecast before setting off). If you’ve got the Wainwrights bug, you can easily extend the walk to bag neighbouring Ling Fell as well.

Being something of a last outpost of the Lake District, you won’t find many tourists here (except the odd Wainwright bagger), but Sale Fell is well loved by locals who you’ll often come across walking their dogs on the flanks of the fell. They walk this route time and time again – and you’ll probably find yourself understanding exactly why that is once you’ve seen the views.

The Area

The North Western Lakes are one big adventure playground. As well as shorter walks like Sale Fell, there’s plenty of choice if you want more of a leg stretcher for your day out. We’d recommend the classic Lakeland route of Catbells to High Spy, or if you’re feeling really energetic, tackle the full Newlands Round. Whichever version you choose, you’re guaranteed unbeatable views of Derwentwater and the Newlands Valley.
