Good to know

Overview

Raglan Castle is where Henry Tudor, the future King Henry VII, was sent to be safely brought up by Sir William Herbert, arguably the most powerful Welshman at the time. Children will love the artist’s impressions at each sign post and reading the snippets of information about life in the 15th century. Apparently, it was quite the party castle.

The staff are super helpful should you have any questions about famous visitors and the entertaining that went on, and the structure of the castle is still sufficiently in place for you to imagine what the rooms may have looked like in the past.

The grounds are perfect for picnicking as there are many tables dotted around for you to sit at. Four-legged friends aren’t forgotten about either – water bowls are provided or there’s a water refill station if you’d prefer to bring your own.

For The Dogs

Dogs need to kept on a lead but there’s plenty for them to see and sniff and keep them entertained while you explore this historic site. If your pup is a playful one, pay close attention near the moat. The drop is steep.

Opening Hours

Please visit the Cadw website as opening times vary throughout the year.

Parking

Free parking is available but you need to pay to enter the castle grounds.

The Area

After marvelling at Raglan Castle, head to the super stylish Bean & Bread in Abergavenny. Light, airy and wonderfully dog friendly, it’s the perfect place to kick back with a with a cup of coffee and enjoy an amazing brunch. Dogs on leads are very welcome to sniff their way around Sugar Loaf and Usk Valley on the outskirts of Abergavenny. The iconic peak of the Sugar Loaf watches over the market town and offers amazing views towards mid Wales in one direction and South West England in another.
