If you’ve ever driven along the A55 towards Anglesey, you’ll definitely have spotted the awe-inspiring, neo-Norman Penrhyn Castle as you near Bangor. However, it’s the extensive grounds and gardens that we recommend that you visit this castle for. With lots of walking trails to follow, it’s the perfect place for dog walks – both long and short. And on a clear day, the views over Snowdonia and Conwy Bay are incredible.
Overview
While your canine companion will need to be kept on a short lead, an amble around the walled garden is a must. Claim the gorgeous terrace as your own and enjoy a takeaway coffee beside the bubbling fountains. It’s particularly lovely when the climbing roses are in bloom. Then head down to the jungle-esque Bog Garden with its enormous Monstrous Gunnera plants. If the thatched huts are open, pop in for an elevated view – Star Wars fans will be reminded of Endor.
The one-mile long Discover Nature Walk is a brilliant way to explore the lesser-known parts of the castle grounds. It’s great to do in different seasons to experience the changes in the landscape. Whilst dogs are unfortunately not allowed in the castle itself, if there’s an exhibition on that you’d particularly like to see perhaps you could treat a dog-sitting companion to an ice cream while you pop in and take a look.
