Visit WebsiteImagine you could step back in time to when the Romans arrived in North Wales. Well, nestled between the villages of Hope and Caergwrle in Flintshire, you’ll find Park in the Past, an exciting and innovative heritage and conservation project that plans to do exactly that!
Overview
Located on the outskirts of Wrexham, this former Welsh quarry comprises 120 acres of natural beauty, including woodlands, wetlands, open fields, a magnificent 35 acre lake and the gorgeous River Alyn. Every type of terrain for a dream dog walk, don’t you think?
On arrival, you’ll often be greeted by two friendly dogs at the visitor centre – ask for map if you haven’t visited before – where you must pay for your ticket. Cross the river and head towards the lake for our favourite circular walk taking in incredible views of both the lake and the countryside beyond.
If you’re feeling brave, how about indulging in a wild swim? Or perhaps you’d prefer to kayak or SUP board? Occasionally, blue algae appears in the lake. The staff at the centre will warn you about it when you sign in and also let you know if and when it’s safe for furry friends to enter the water. If your dog is partial to a dip, keep them on a lead, as well as at the top of the lake when you reach the protected wildlife area.
Whilst the restoration project is still very new, it’s a beautiful walk that both you and your pup will enjoy. The Dog Friendly Destinations team has visited Park in the Past numerous times over the past year and it’s clear to see how hard the centre and the local community are working to make the site safe and enjoyable for visitors and their four-legged friends.

North Wales is a wonderful part of the world to explore with your dog at your heels. If you’re good with heights, how about a walk across Pontcysyllte Aqueduct? Designed and built by Thomas Telford and William Jessop, the views from the bridge are incredible. Or you could admire it from the ground on a four mile return walk from the nearby Tŷ Mawr Country Park. Chirk Castle is just a few miles away. Dogs are very welcome at the 480 acre estate although not inside the castle itself or the formal gardens. Grab a cuppa and soak up the historic atmosphere with a walk around the beautiful grounds.
