Pap of Glencoe

The Pap of Glencoe is a standout peak in the Mamores range, offering hikers and their pups jaw-dropping panoramic views over Loch Leven, Glencoe Village and the wild Highlands beyond. Starting from the charming Glencoe Village, you’ll follow the scenic Glencoe Orbital Path winding through peaceful woodlands until you spot the signs and gate leading to the Pap itself. From here, prepare for a steep, exhilarating climb – the last 100 meters involve some scrambling, so sturdy boots and a sense of adventure are a must!

The full route is about 7 km and can take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours depending on your pace and how often you pause to soak in the breathtaking views (and snap those perfect photos). Don’t forget to pack a picnic to enjoy at the summit.

At the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping vistas that stretch across Loch Leven, Glencoe Village nestled below, and a rugged mountain panorama that’s simply unforgettable on a clear day. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife too – deer, goats, and sheep often make surprise appearances along the trail.

For the descent, you can retrace your steps or take a looping route for a change of scenery. Just a heads-up: pups need to be comfortable with rocky, uneven terrain, so make sure your furry friend is up for the challenge!

• Always bring a lead, plenty of poop bags, and a tick remover – ticks are common in this area.

• Keep your dog under close control or on a lead, especially near wildlife, livestock, and during lambing season to keep everyone safe.

• Make sure your pup is confident on rocky, uneven terrain and scrambles – they’ll need good footing on this hike!

• Carry fresh water and a bowl to keep your dog hydrated, especially on warmer days.

• Take breaks as needed to let your dog rest and enjoy the surroundings.

• After the hike, check your dog carefully for ticks or burrs before heading home.

The Pap of Glencoe is open year-round and free to explore. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours and between spring and late autumn when the weather is generally kinder and the trails safer. Always check local conditions before setting out, especially in winter months.

You can park at the Glencoe Lochan Trail car park (postcode PH49 4HT), which is a popular starting point for the Pap of Glencoe hike. Parking charges apply here. Alternatively, there’s free parking available a little further down on Loverose Way, just a short walk from the trailhead.

Please note that spaces can fill up quickly during busy periods, so arriving early is a good idea.
