Noss Mayo, Plymouth, PL8 1EW
Visit WebsiteThis 7km circular walk (around 1 hour 30 minutes) offers the perfect mix of countryside and coastline. Starting and finishing in the charming village of Noss Mayo, it follows stretches of the South West Coast Path with sweeping views across to Cornwall. It's a brilliant outing for both you and your four-legged friend.
Overview
Begin your adventure by turning left out of The Ship Inn car park, passing the small church and heading gently uphill. The path takes you past the village tennis courts on your left – a gradual incline that, while not too steep, is the highest point of the walk and a great way to warm up. In spring and early summer, don’t be surprised to see the newest flock of lambs enjoying themselves as you pass local farmland.
Soon you’ll reach a crossroads with a gate ahead marked ‘Coast’. Turn left, then almost immediately right through the gate beside the car park, and follow the trail as it begins its gentle descent. That’s the hardest part behind you!
From here, the path carries you along the South West Coast Path without the need for further turns – just settle in and enjoy the journey. On a sunny day, the views are some of the finest in the West Country. Keep an eye out for cows in the fields, and if you glance out to sea, you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins, seals or even porpoises who are often known to make an appearance in reasonably proximity to the cliffs.
After a while you can feel yourself starting to curve around and heading back towards Noss Mayo, and you’ll be guided through peaceful woodland with the River Yealm alongside you on the left. Before long, you’ll emerge back into the village, where a well-earned drink at The Ship Inn is waiting to round off your walk in style.
For The Dogs
Unless your dog has a dip in the water by the pub before beginning your walk, there aren’t any places for them to cool off on the walk if it’s a hot day. It’s therefore advisable to bring some water along for them to stay hydrated.
Parking
The Ship Inn car park represents your best option for parking for this route, though there are plenty of other options available close by.
Check the tide times before parking. The Ship Inn usually posts them on a sign outside, but it’s worth double checking as cars have been swept into the estuary at high tide!
Wear sensible footwear. Parts of the route are uneven and muddy in places, so sturdy walking shoes are best. Definitely leave your clean, white trainers at home.
Be mindful of livestock and cliff edges. You may come across cows and sheep, so make sure your dog has good recall if off-lead. On windy days, keep them close on the coast path to avoid any slips near the cliffs.
Book a table at The Ship Inn. Aim for a Sunday lunch about 90 minutes before you set off. With great local ales, ciders and produce, plus a warm welcome for dogs, it’s a favourite stop.
