Visit WebsiteIf you’re looking for a stunning coastal walk with your four-legged friend, the route from Newton Beach to Porthcawl is an absolute gem. Situated between the expansive Merthyr Mawr sand dunes and Porthcawl town, walkers and their furry companions can explore and enjoy a mixture of sandy shores, rugged dunes and scenic sea views making it a fantastic choice for dog owners and nature lovers.
Overview
Using Newton Beach as your starting point, you can turn immediately left and enjoy the 3-4 km stroll along the sandy plains to the edge of the Ogmore river before circling back and passing through the Merthyr Mawr sand dunes, which add an adventurous element to the walk. The dunes can be a bit challenging for less active dogs, but they’re worth exploring if you’re up for it.
Turning right from Newton Beach (or coming back through from the dunes) takes you to Porthcawl via the smaller beaches of Trecco Bay, Sandy Bay and Coney Beach. If you’re lucky enough to take in the views during a sunrise or sunset, you won’t be disappointed.
You have plenty of opportunities for a pit stop for you and your dog. Coney Surf School & Beach Café is well stocked with pup cups and locally sourced Welsh coffee; Grow & Grind on Sandy Bay offers an array of ‘Bloomin brews’, whilst Corner Coffee, snuggled into and overlooking Porthcawl Harbour, will greet your pooch with a well-earned biscuit. This represents a good end point to your walk before embarking on the return leg.
For The Dogs
Bring leads, poop bags, a towel if your dog enjoys a swim, and water as some areas are quite open with little shade. Keep an eye out for horses on the beach as they can sometimes be seen galloping along the water’s edge.
Opening Hours
Newton Beach is dog friendly all year round, as are the Merthyr Mawr dunes. As you approach Porthcawl, Trecco Bay and Coney Beach are only accessible for dogs during October – April, but you can still enjoy access along the coastal path.
Parking
Parking can be found in Newton Village, either at St John the Baptist Church, along Beach Road (CF36 5NE), or in the overflow car park at the beach’s edge.
Check the tide times before setting off, as all of the beaches are much wider at low tide and provide more opportunities for your dog/s to run free. The amusement arcades adjoining Sandy Bay and Coney Beach are dog friendly. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous you can become one with the sea and enjoy an open water swim on Coney Beach before nipping in for a quick sauna overlooking the beach courtesy of Hikitalo – booking required.
