Overview

The identical lodges can be booked individually or together if you’re a larger group as they’re in easy walking distance of each other. Both sleep six guests plus one infant in three bedrooms and welcome two dogs (potentially more by prior agreement).

Whether you opt for Alder or Aspen, four-legged friends will love the open plan layout meaning they’re never far from their pack. The kitchens have been thoughtfully designed and are fully equipped for family dinners. Eat at the dining table or out on the decked veranda where you’ll find a table and chairs should you wish to soak up the stunning scenery while you dine. Afterwards, snuggle up in the living room in front of the log burner to watch a favourite film on the 55-inch smart TV.

Each lodge has three spacious bedrooms – a master with ensuite, a double and a twin – and all have fitted wardrobes and luxurious cotton bed linen to sink into. The master bedrooms feature French doors with direct access on to the veranda. Leave the windows ajar if you want to wake up to birdsong.

On arrival, you’ll be greeted with a wonderful welcome basket brimming with locally sourced produce, including fresh free-range eggs from the Merklands Wood hens and complimentary gin and tonics made from a unique gin recipe handcrafted by Pentland Hills Gin using juniper berries harvested from Merklands Wood. The perfect start to your Scottish break.

The Area

Nestled in the foothills of the Pentland Hills on the edge of the Scottish Borders yet only 20 minutes from Edinburgh city bypass and 45 minutes from Glasgow city centre, the lodges at Merklands Wood provide a peaceful escape within easy reach of Scotland’s major cities. The nearest amenities are located four miles away in the beautiful conservation village of West Linton while the traditional market town of Biggar is within seven miles and features some lovely eateries and quaint coffee shops. Playful pups might prefer a trip to nearby Tweed Valley Forest Park though, specifically Glentress. There are several scenic walking trails to follow, and dogs are welcome in the visitor centre and café too.
