Overview

The walk along the shore is mostly flat and easy, with a few rockier, more uneven sections where walking boots will be greatly appreciated. The route takes you past Glas-allt-Shiel, Queen Victoria’s bolthole for when she wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of Balmoral. There are certainly worse places for a holiday home!

A lap of the loch is a fair walk at just under eight miles, but those looking for an even longer hike could tackle Lochnagar, the area’s most popular Munro. Previously summited by Queen Victoria (admittedly on a pony), Lochnagar has outstanding views but is a serious outing and should only be undertaken with sufficient preparation.

For The Dogs

Bring leads, water, poo bags, treats and a tick hook.

The Area

The Cairngorms National Park is one of the best places in Britain for a dog friendly holiday. Whether you prefer easy loch side strolls, ambles through the forest or more strenuous days in the mountains, you’ll be spoiled for choice with the abundance of outstanding walks on offer. Explore the Linn of Dee, a favourite picnic spot of Queen Victoria. Caldenion pinewoods and a rocky chasm along the river Dee make for a perfect morning or afternoon stroll. You can also try your hand at orienteering!
