Good to know

Overview

It starts with a stroll along the Llangollen Canal before passing by the Horseshoe Falls where you can take a dip with your dog if it’s not too busy. Yes, bring towels if you’re going on a sunny day.

Next, head up the hill to see the remains of Llantysilio Church and Valle Crucis Abbey – we suggest going slightly off route here and heading over the hill rather than around it as the views are to die for.

Venture on another two miles to the ruins of Castle Dinas Bran before letting your weary legs carry you back downhill into Llangollen. Dogs can be off lead but you’ll spot a few sheep and cows along your walk so keep an eye out if you have a playful pup.

We’d recommend packing a picnic and some doggy treats and making a full day of it. You’ll be spoilt for choice for amazing spots to sit and enjoy your lunch. But do save some space for an ice cream or cake reward when you get back to the town. Or even a sip of Welsh ale in the dog friendly pub, The Corn Mill. They also serve delicious food if you’re still peckish.

For The Dogs

Bring leads, water, nibbles and poop bags.

Opening Hours

You can walk the Llangollen History Trail whenever you please but do check the weather before you head out. Better visibility means more incredible views to enjoy.

Parking

Park at the East Street car park in Llangollen itself. It can get quite busy later in the day, especially during school holidays and tourist season.

The Area

How are you with heights? If looking down doesn’t bother you take a walk across nearby Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Designed and built by Thomas Telford and Williams Jessop, Pontcysyllte means ‘the bridge that connects’ and the views are incredible. Boat trips across are available if you want to enjoy the experience but prefer not to do it on foot – or paws. Once your feet are back on firm ground, take the four mile return walk to Tŷ Mawr Country Park. Pack a picnic or some snacks and sit and enjoy the River Dee views beneath the Cefn Viaduct.
