Overview
Easily reachable from North Wales and Cheshire, if you’re in the vicinity of Anglesey, it’s definitely worth making the effort to visit Llanddwyn Island. While Llanddwyn is probably best known for its iconic lighthouse, Tŵr Mawr, there’s plenty more to explore including pilots’ cottages, a huge stone cross, not to mention the breath-taking views of Snowdonia.
We recommend parking at Newborough beach car park. To reach the island, you can choose to walk along the beach itself or instead head through the forest. This is a really lovely walk with occasional glimpses of the lighthouse through the trees.
It’s best to visit the island between 1st October – 30th April so as not to disturb nesting birds and rare wild flowers that grow there over the colder months. However, dogs are allowed on the island all year round if you stay on the public path and keep them on a short lead.
Being an island, we’d advise checking the tide times (and the weather!) before you go – it can be cut off for a least a couple of hours at high tide. Take a walk back along Newborough beach, a three-and-a-half-mile clean beach with golden sand dunes, and then treat yourself to an ice cream back at the car park.
For The Dogs
Bring leads, poop bags, and a towel if your pup is partial to a paddle. Please note, dogs are not allowed on the western part of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.
Opening Hours
There are no opening hours as such, but daylight hours recommended. It’s best to visit between 1st October – 30th April, so as not to disturb the nesting birds and wild flowers that grow there over the colder months. Parking
We recommend parking at Newborough beach where you’ll need £5 to access the car park via the toll gate.
