Overview
The reserve showcases incredible rock formations, some of which are the oldest in Europe, dating back over 3 million years. These ancient rocks reveal the earth’s geological past through their unique shapes and patterns and visitors can admire at the dramatic cliffs and learn about the forces that shaped them.
The reserve also boasts stunning natural beauty, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, lochs, and moorlands. It is home to a variety of wildlife, and visitors may encounter rare plants, birds, and other species as you explore the landscape.
There are three trails to choose from, which vary from short, easy walks to longer, more challenging climbs, allowing options for humans and pooches of all ages and abilities. Informative signage and interactive exhibits along the trails will help you understand the significance of the rock formations and the scientific discoveries made in this area.
Pop to the visitor centre before you set off and pick up a map of the trails. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear and dress for the weather, especially if you plan to tackle one of the longer hikes.
Nestled in the remote setting of the Scottish Highlands there are limited places to eat so if you’re planning a full day out, why not bring a picnic with you? There are tables for visitors to use.
For The Dogs
Bring a lead, poop bags and a tick hook. Please respect the natural environment during your visit and keep dogs under close control, and stay on designated trails to avoid disturbing wildlife.

There are no opening hours as such, but daylight is recommended to appreciate the views.

There is free parking at the reserve with public toilets open 24 hours. The nearest postcode IV27 4HH – from Ullapool follow the A835 north for approximately 21 km.
The Area
Part of the North West Highlands Geopark, Assynt is one of Scotland’s best outdoor adventure playgrounds; a land of lochs, lofty peaks and undeniable, extraordinary beauty. It’s worth taking the time to explore this area for more than a few days – there’s so much waiting to be discovered. Nearby hikes in the area include Cùl Mòr, Stac Pollaidh and Cùl Beag. Or for something a little easier on the paws, Ullapool is located approximately 21 km south of Knockan Crag. A charming fishing village, it offers a picturesque harbour, quaint shops, restaurants, and cafés.
