Visit WebsiteHigh Force is one of England's most spectacular waterfalls, offering a fantastic day out for both people and their four-legged friends. Tucked into the beautiful North Pennines, this walk combines dramatic scenery with peaceful woodland paths, making it an ideal destination for anyone looking to escape into nature with their canine companion.
Overview
This walk delivers a real wow factor almost from the moment you set off. Just a short stroll from the visitor centre, you’ll be treated to the spectacular sight of High Force, where the River Tees thunders over the dramatic rock face. From there, the circular woodland trail winds through beautiful ancient woodland and peaceful riverside paths, giving both you and your furry friend plenty to enjoy.
The route is well signposted and offers a lovely mix of woodland trails, riverside views and breathtaking scenery; don’t forget to look out for some carved woodland sculptures along the way. It’s not the longest walk, but there’s so much to take in that you’ll find yourself stopping regularly to admire the views, or waiting while your dog investigates yet another interesting scent. It’s the perfect destination for anyone wanting to enjoy the great outdoors with their best friend by their side.
For The Dogs
High Force gets a big paws up from our four-legged testers. The woodland trail is packed with exciting smells, shaded paths and plenty of new sights to explore, making it a brilliant adventure for curious noses.
Dogs are welcome throughout the trail, although we’d recommend keeping them on a lead near the waterfall and along the riverside sections, where the water flows quickly, and there are some steep drops. It’s also worth noting that although there are no livestock on the woodland trail you may see them in neighbouring fields.
There are plenty of places to pause for a rest, and the visitor facilities are welcoming to well-behaved dogs. You’ll also find toilets and a snack kiosk serving hot drinks, cold refreshments and ice cream, the perfect excuse for a quick break before or after your walk. Don’t forget to bring fresh water for your pup, especially on warmer days, and always carry poo bags to help keep this beautiful spot looking its best.
Tickets & Opening Hours
Tickets are required to access the waterfall and woodland trail and can be purchased in advance via the High Force website. The admission fee helps Raby Estates maintain this beautiful location, ensuring it remains a wonderful place for visitors to enjoy for years to come.
Check the High Force website for current opening times before you set off, as they change through the year.
Parking
Parking couldn’t be easier, with a dedicated pay-and-display car park just a short stroll from the entrance to the trail. It makes arriving with excited dogs and walking gear nice and straightforward.
The car park can get busy during weekends and school holidays, so it’s worth arriving early if you can. Doing so not only makes parking easier but also means you and your four-legged friend can enjoy a quieter walk before the crowds arrive.
One of the best things about visiting High Force is that it’s just the beginning. The surrounding area is packed with beautiful walks, charming villages, and even more places to explore with your four-legged friend.
If you still have energy left, Low Force Waterfall and the Bowlees Visitor Centre are well worth adding to your day out, offering more scenic riverside walks and fantastic photo opportunities. The wider Upper Teesdale area is a haven for walkers, with miles of stunning countryside waiting to be explored.
After working up an appetite, why not call in at the nearby High Force Hotel? This welcoming, dog-friendly pub and hotel is the perfect place to relax after your walk, with dogs welcome inside and a delicious menu packed with hearty meals and local favourites. It’s an ideal way to round off a day of exploring.
Whether you’re visiting for a quick morning stroll or making a full day of it, High Force offers a fantastic mix of natural beauty and dog-friendly adventure. It’s the kind of place where tails wag from start to finish, and where you’ll almost certainly leave planning your next visit.
