Good to know

Overview

Standing at just over 400 metres, Helm Crag rewards you with fantastic views over Grasmere village and its sparkling lake.

This circular walk begins and ends in Grasmere and is a moderately challenging route – perfect for active pups and their humans looking for a satisfying adventure without a full day on the fells.

Helm Crag can easily be tackled as a standalone walk in around 2–3 hours, or if you’re feeling energetic, it can be combined with neighbouring Wainwrights like Gibson Knott, Calf Crag and Tarn Crag to create a longer 4–5 hour loop.

The walk starts from Easedale Road. Keep an eye out for the honesty box flapjacks we found along the way (bring some change!). From there, simply follow the well-trodden path to the summit, where spectacular views in every direction await.

For The Dogs

Bring a lead and plenty of poop bags for this one. Dogs should be kept under close control, especially if there’s livestock grazing along the route. There are a few rocky sections near the summit, so it’s best suited to confident, sure-footed pups.

Opening Hours

Open 24 hours though daylight visits are recommended.

Parking

There are several car parks in Grasmere – LA22 9SL, LA22 9SW, LA22 9TA – but it’s best to arrive early to secure a spot.

The Area

There’s plenty more for you and your pup to explore nearby. Grasmere village itself is wonderfully dog friendly, with cosy cafés, welcoming pubs and local shops where muddy paws are usually no problem. If you fancy another scenic walk, Loughrigg Fell offers stunning views with plenty of places for dogs to roam, while the nearby Rydal Water and Rydal Cave make for a fun, easy-going adventure with plenty of splash potential. Easedale Tarn is another great option – a beautiful walk through classic Lake District scenery, complete with waterfalls, open spaces and a peaceful tarn where you can stop for a well-earned rest.
