Good to know

Overview

Park at the Forestry England car park to start this moderate walk, which should take you a few hours. The route climbs steadily uphill, but before you’ve got a chance to feel too tired, the incline ends and you arrive at the rather impressive Drake Stone.

Thought to be over 2,000 tonnes, local legend says that the stone has magic powers and that children used to be passed over the stone to heal them of various ailments. The views over the Coquetdale countryside aren’t bad either!

When you’ve finish admiring the views, the walk returns to the woods via a pretty lake. Dogs can enjoy exploring off lead here, without needing to worry about livestock lurking around the corner. If you want to extend your walk, you can do so with a visit to the ruins of Harbottle Castle.

For The Dogs

Bring leads, water, poop bags and treats.

Opening Hours

The car park is open 24 hours but it’s best to visit in daylight to appreciate the views.

Parking

Park in the Harbottle Forestry Commision car park – it’s free!
