While Whernside and Ingleborough are the tallest and second tallest mountains in Yorkshire respectively, Pen Y Ghent, which completes the trio, is the ninth highest peak. Great Shunner Fell is actually the third highest summit and can be climbed either from Wensleydale or Swaledale.
Overview
Great Shunner Fell, the real third highest summit in Yorkshire, is located some distance away from the famous Three Peaks, on the cusp of Wensleydale and Swaledale, and is consequently much quieter.
This fell has a real air of remoteness and panoramic views over the Yorkshire Dales. Not a particularly steep or challenging walk, you nevertheless need a good level of fitness to get to the top – it is the third highest summit in Yorkshire after all.
We’d recommend starting your ascent from Hardraw and following the Pennine Way to the top. It’s a straightforward route with the occasional waymarker, although as with all fell walks, you’ll need to be prepared with sturdy boots, a map and a compass as a minimum.
Featured in the movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Hardraw Force is perfectly located to tag onto the start or end of a walk up Great Shunner Fell. Entry is charged for via the turnstile behind the Green Dragon pub.

With more than 2,000 km of footpaths, the Yorkshire Dales are an outdoor lover’s paradise. Hill walkers can take on the challenge of the Dales 30, summiting the Dales’ hills over 2,000 feet, while if you prefer lower level walks there are plenty of waterfalls and riverside strolls to choose from.
