Visit WebsiteThe Cairngorms are Britain’s largest National Park and present almost endless possibilities for the outdoor explorer. But there’s one place that has it all: Glenmore Forest Park is the ultimate outdoor adventure playground.
Overview
Miles and miles of forest tracks enable you to explore some of the most beautiful places the Cairngorms has to offer: walk to the the ethereally beautiful waters of An Lochan Uaine (‘the Green Loch’), follow the babbling waters of the burn from Allt Mor, or, if you want more of a challenge, head for the Ryvoan Pass and climb Meall a’ Bhuachaille.
As well as being an outdoor adventure paradise for walkers and cyclists, Glenmore Forest is a haven for many species of Scottish wildlife. In particular, Glenmore Forest Park is one of the few strongholds in Britain where you can find the Capercaillie – a large turkey-sized grouse which can only be found in the UK in Scottish forests.
From April to August, dogs need to be kept on leads so as not to disturb the Capercaillies during the very sensitive breeding season, but dogs will still find plenty of exciting sniffs to keep them entertained, and the rivers and lochs offer plenty of opportunities for water-loving pups to have a splash.
There is a café with toilets at the main visitor centre, open seven days a week. There is also a water point outside where you can get fresh water for your dogs on a hot day – ideal for helping to keep your pups cool.
For The Dogs
Bring leads, a towel, water and a travel bowl, and a tick hook.
Opening Hours
Daylight recommended. The café is open 9.30am – 3.30pm seven days a week.
Parking
There is a pay & display car park at the visitor centre.
Glenmore Forest Park is a short drive from Aviemore, one of the most popular bases in the Cairngorms for outdoor adventures and winter sports. Dog walkers are thoroughly spoiled for choice with countless walking trails, including the beautiful circular around Loch an Eilein. Venture further north into the Cairngorms to discover the many hiking trails scattered around the Glenlivet Estate (and possibly call into the distillery after, if you can find a dog sitter) or explore one of the five woodlands surrounding Grantown-on-Spey, the capital of Strathspey.
