Visit WebsiteA beautiful 6–10km hike through the heart of the Garw Valley. Quieter and less travelled than many nearby routes, this hidden gem offers a peaceful escape with plenty of charm. A great walk for adventurous dogs, with quiet trails, woodland paths and open countryside to enjoy.
Overview
Begin your adventure by parking up (free of charge) in the Co-Op car park using the postcode listed above. Facing the store, take the path along its left-hand side and before you know it, you’ll be on the trail. Cross the first bridge you come to, keeping the river on your right for the rest of the walk. If your furry friend enjoys a paddle, this is the best (and probably only) opportunity – depending on how clean the water’s looking.
Follow the public footpath for around 10–15 minutes until you spot a clear opportunity to take a looping left turn (think 7 or 8 o’clock on a clock face) that brings you back on yourself along slightly higher ground. You’ll soon see the Garw Valley Forest ahead, a peaceful stretch of woodland that offers a gradual, steady climb as you venture deeper in.
As the path begins to level out, you’ll find yourself at one of the highest points in the valley. Continue along the same direction and you’ll come across a lone Welsh flag and a nearby bench, accessible either from the flat or via a short final incline that loops around the back. You and your four-legged explorer will have earned a rest here, so take a seat and soak up the stunning views over Blaengarw. If you look closely, you might even spot the Co-Op car park where you started!
(The flag is dedicated to the memory of Private Barber of C Company, 2nd Battalion of the Royal Welsh, who was killed in Basra City in 1987.)
When you’re ready to head back, continue past the memorial and follow the tracks that lead gently downhill. The descent winds much like the route up, so keep an eye on your bearings. You’ll soon see familiar landmarks from your climb. Before long, you’ll return to the flat path near the original bridge. If it’s been a muddy day, it’s the perfect spot for a quick stream wash for your pup before hopping back in the car.
For The Dogs
Dogs will love exploring the peaceful trails of the Garw Valley, with plenty of space to roam and explore off the beaten track. Most of the route is away from traffic, though a lead is handy for livestock and woodland sections.
Parking
Parking is free at the Co-Op car park in Blaengarw (CF32 8NW), which also serves as the perfect starting point for your walk.
Be seasonally savvy: This route is great in summer thanks to the shade of the forest, but it can get extremely muddy in winter. If you’ve got a portable shower, bring it along. Otherwise, be ready for some seriously mucky paws!
Quiet and peaceful: You might meet the odd local or fellow walker, but this trail is generally quieter than most in the area. It’s a great choice for nervous or reactive dogs who prefer a bit more space to explore.
Footwear matters: The terrain can be uneven, bumpy and slippery when wet, so sturdy walking boots are a must to keep you steady on your paws (and theirs).
