Overview

This woodland clings to the slopes of Dodd, a small fell which is also a Wainwright. Follow the Dodd Summit Trail, a three-mile walk which climbs through the forest to arrive at the summit. The majority of the walk is wooded, making this is a great Wainwright for dog owners.

Once you’re clear of the trees, there’s a fantastic panorama taking in Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite Lake and even the Solway Coast and Scotland on a clear day. At only 502m, it’s one of the Lake District’s smaller hills, but you’ll still need a good few hours for this route.

If you prefer easier walks, there are three other trails to choose from. Dodd Wood is also home to specially designed osprey viewpoints, as well as a red squirrel feeding station.

Before you leave, stop at the tearoom for a slice of cake. Located by the car park, dogs are welcome at the outside tables.

Opening Hours

The car park is open 24 hours but it’s best to visit in daylight to appreciate the views.

The Area

The Lake District is a dog owner’s paradise, with the majority of shops and attractions welcoming visitors with four paws. Many of the local countryside walks need leads on due to sheep and cattle, so heading to one of the national park’s forests is a good way to guarantee a livestock free walk. Whinlatter Forest is one of our favourites. England’s only true ‘mountain forest’, it has walking trails aplenty, as well as routes for runners and mountain bikers.
