Cogden Beach

Panoramic ocean views & an incredible café

Bridport, Dorset, DT6 4RL

Visit Website

It might not have the facilities of the more popular Dorset beaches but we think that’s exactly what makes Cogden beach so special. With less hustle and bustle, it can feel like your own private, dog friendly beach. And if you’re approaching the beach from Abbotsbury, the scenic extravaganza will begin before you even reach the car park as the road you climb up offers views for miles.

Overview

Owned by the National Trust, the car park is free for members and just a token amount for those that aren’t. Walk through the field and down on to the beach. Take a right when you reach the pebbles, and simply keep walking. Dogs are allowed off lead.

Expect huge waves on stormier days and, depending on the weather, the beach will either be pebbly or sandy. It really does chop and change. Keep strolling, maintaining a good distance from the cliffs. They’ve been known to collapse now and again, especially after heavy rain. Don’t let this deter you, though; it doesn’t happen that often but it is worth bearing in mind.

Before long you’ll be greeted with Hive Beach Café. This place is the hidden gem of the south coast (although it is pretty well known). You might struggle to get a table on a sunny day but if you’re lucky enough to spy a free table, grab it. The menu is a seafood lover’s dream. More importantly, they really welcome dogs and even sell homemade dog treats which look good enough for humans. It’s the perfect halfway stop on this dog friendly beach walk.

After lunch, head back but this time across the top of the cliffs. You’ll catch a glimpse of Portland (the Gibraltar of Wessex according to Dorset’s most famous resident, Thomas Hardy) and can admire panoramic ocean views every step of the way until you get back to the car. Wear shoes rather than sandals or flip flops. Your feet will thank you for it.

For The Dogs

Dogs are allowed off lead. Bring water, treats and poop bags. And a towel if you have a pup partial to a doggy paddle.

Opening Hours

Daylight hours are recommended.

Parking

Parking is free for National Trust members and a small charge for non-members.

The Area

Looking for dog friendly day trips in the area? How about a ride on the Seaton Tramway. It travels alongside the River Axe estuary and through two beautiful nature reserves. Dogs travel for a flat fee of £1 each way. The gardens at Forde Abbey are also a favourite of ours. You need to keep your furry friend on a short lead but it’s still a paw-some day out for lovers of flora and fauna. Or take a walk up Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast.
