Overview
Starting at Broadsands beach, there’s an immediate chance for your dog to burn off some energy on the flat sands before you set off on the route. Don’t forget to fuel up with a coffee or a dog ice cream from Venus or K’ohana before you go. Head to the beach huts at the far right-hand side of the shore, where you’ll find a gate leading up to a wide open field which is great for off-lead zoomies and offering brilliant views back over the bay.
From there, hug the coastline, following the tyre tracks – there’s no need to take any detours, just let the path guide you. Your first stop is Elberry Rocks and Elberry Cove, a peaceful pebble beach with the ruins of an old bath house adding a little intrigue. The walk continues on a gentle incline along the edge of Churston Woods, where you’ll catch glimpses of Churston Golf Course before arriving at Churston Cove. It’s a picture-perfect spot that wouldn’t look out of place on a holiday postcard.
Once your dog has cooled off with a sploosh, continue onwards slightly uphill towards Fishcombe Cove, which is readily signposted near the top. A short descent brings you to Fishcombe Cove Café-Bar – an ideal place for a break and a snack – before retracing your steps back to Broadsands.
Overall, this walk falls into the medium scale of challenger for walkers – enough to get the legs pulsing, but still manageable. Expect to cover around 4–4.5 miles, with the incline as a bonus.
For The Dogs
Make sure you check the seasonal restrictions for Broadsands beach. Dogs are generally not permitted between May – September but this doesn’t stop you embarking on the majority of this walk.
Even in the hot weather a lot of the route is shaded between coves, and the coves themselves offer splooshing opportunities to cool down at regular intervals!
