Good to know

Overview

For those not familiar with Gelert, it’s believed that he was the faithful dog of Welsh Prince, Llewelyn the Great. In tragic circumstances Llewelyn slayed Gelert after mistakenly believing that his trusty dog had killed his baby son. However, the brave animal was simply protecting the child from a predatory wolf. A remorseful Llewelyn then buried Gelert close to the river and supposedly never smiled again.

Don’t let Llewelyn’s grief stop you from taking a walk from the village to Gelert’s Grave, though. It’s been voted one of the best short walks in Snowdonia. We recommend following this lovely National Trust trail. It’s approximately two miles in total and four-legged friends can happily pad along off lead. You may spot a few sheep and cows along your walk so keep an eye out if you have a playful pup.

Head to the dog friendly tea garden at Caffi Colwyn for a coffee and a sweet treat after your amble. Its riverside location on Church Street is perfect.

The Area

Wherever you visit in North Wales, you can be assured of dramatic landscapes and amazing views, especially from the top of Snowdon. We’d recommend heading up The Snowdon Ranger Path. It’s the quietest and also the easiest – for dogs, too – if you’re not that keen on steps. Or how about a trip on the Ffestiniog Railway? Dogs are welcome on all trains and there are lots of lovely Welsh villages to explore. A stay in Wales also wouldn’t be complete without a trip to one of its 600 castles. Harlech Castle sits on the edge of Snowdonia National Park and has stunning views over Cardigan Bay.
