Overview

Step back in time with a visit to Avebury World Heritage Site. The largest prehistoric stone circle in the world, the standing stones at Avebury have been in place for around 4,600 years – making them roughly contemporary with the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Scattered seemingly at random as you wander through them on the ground, when viewed from above the outline of a huge circle, and two connecting avenues, can be made out. Unfortunately many of the original stones are suspected to be missing, but there are still dozens which remain in place for visitors to see today.

There is a large visitor complex at Avebury, and dogs on leads can join you at the stones and in the gardens. Don’t limit your visit to just the main site though, as there are plenty of fantastic dog walking opportunities to explore in the wider countryside.

Stroll along the avenue towards the village of West Kennet, where you’ll find a much quieter (and slightly creepier) Neolithic long barrow, before returning via Silbury Hill: Europe’s largest artificial prehistoric mound, the exact purpose of which remains a mystery.
