Tucked away in the rolling hills of rural Somerset, Collie Shepherd Huts is the kind of place that invites you to breathe out, slow down and let the countryside work its magic. Founded by Chloe Wilkins after swapping a 35-year career for a more creative life, this dreamy little retreat blends the charm of farm life with just the right touch of luxury. And yes, your four-legged friend is more than welcome too.
From stargazing on summer evenings to toasty games nights with a box of classics, Chloe and her husband Kevin have thought of everything. There are ponies in the paddock, surprise breakfast packs and jugs lovingly collected from local charity shops. It’s personal, peaceful and packed with Somerset soul.
We caught up with Chloe to find out what inspired her leap into shepherd hut life, what guests love most, and why dogs are just as much a part of the experience as the humans who bring them.
Hi Chloe, can you tell us a bit about Collie Shepherd Huts. How did they come about, and what inspired you to open them as luxury holiday retreats?
Collie Shepherd Huts came to life through a thoughtful farm diversification project, blending the charm of rural Somerset with comforts of modern luxury. For Chloe`, it was also a bold personal journey, leaving behind a 35-year career to pursue something creative and fulfilling.
With the support of her husband Kevin, whose practical skills and shared vision were key, they transformed part of their farm into a welcoming retreat. Together, they have a space where guests can relax, reconnect with nature, and enjoy a truly unique countryside escape.
What do guests tend to be most surprised or delighted by when they arrive?
Guests are instantly captivated by the stunning views over the Somerset Levels, where peaceful scenery sets a welcoming tone. In the front paddock, miniature Shetland ponies graze quietly, adding a delightful touch for animal lovers. Inside, a surprise breakfast pack with tea, coffee, and thoughtful extras awaits alongside plush robes and slippers for a cosy, luxurious stay. One of the most frequent compliments we receive is about the incredibly comfortable beds, ensuring a restful night’s sleep.
What do you personally enjoy most about hosting guests at Collie Shepherd Huts?
For us, it’s about sharing our little corner of the countryside, giving guests the space to unwind, reconnect, and soak in the peacefulness of nature. We love knowing they leave refreshed, taking with them special memories made here.
How do the huts – and the surrounding landscape – change with the seasons?
The huts and landscape shift beautifully with the seasons, from spring blossoms and summer starlit evenings to autumn’s golden glow and winter’s peaceful stillness. Each season offers guests a fresh way to connect with nature, with others, and with themselves.
The interiors are so warm and welcoming. How would you describe their style, and are there any little details guests should keep an eye out for?
Collie is colourful and full of character, inspired by the creative spirit of nearby Glastonbury. Guests often notice the cheerful collection of jugs a homely, handcrafted touch that adds warmth and personality.
Shetland View offers a more serene atmosphere, blending traditional charm with a clean, Scandi-inspired style. Oak-framed windows flood the space with natural light, while woodland-themed curtains and cushions soften the interiors, creating a timeless, tranquil retreat.
Each shepherd’s hut includes a box of classic games such as chess, backgammon, Uno, dominoes, and many more perfect for cosy evenings in. You’ll also find a selection of books to unwind with, and a Smart TV for streaming your favourite Netflix movies.
If guests want to recreate that same cosy, inviting feel at home, do you have any favourite interiors shops or styling tips to share?
I love mixing in unique pieces from local charity shops many of the jugs and quirky items you’ll spot in the huts were found that way. They add so much character and charm. I also have a bit of a soft spot for baskets, so you might notice those dotted around too! They’re perfect for adding texture and keeping things cosy and practical.
What made you decide to welcome four legged friends too? Have you always been a dog person?
Dogs have always been part of our family, so it felt only natural to welcome them here too. With plenty of space to roam, they can enjoy the Somerset Levels alongside you because no adventure is complete without your four- legged friend.

We love to give our readers a taste of the area. Can you share your favourites for:
Best dog walk
There are so many great dog walks nearby from the doorstep! Provided are local community maps in the huts with plenty of routes to explore. If I had to pick a favourite, it would be Millennium Wood, it’s a lovely spot to walk and explore.
Best dog friendly pub or coffee shop
For a dog-friendly spot to eat or grab a drink, I’d recommend Halfway House in Pitney, or Bere Cider Company. Both are great places to relax with your dog by your side.
Best dog friendly attraction/place to go
Somerset offers some fantastic dog-friendly spots, including Cheddar Gorge, Hestercombe Gardens, Dunster Castle, Brean Down, Lytes Cary Manor, and the Willows & Wetlands Centre perfect for exploring with your four- legged friend.
Any hidden gems nearby that visitors might not know about?
Somerset is full of hidden gems. Nature lovers can spot bitterns or witness the magical starling murmuration’s at RSPB Ham Wall or wander the peaceful Avalon Marshes at Shapwick Heath and Westhay Moor. For sweeping views and rich history, climb King Alfred’s Tower or the iconic Glastonbury Tor. Nearby National Trust treasures like Montacute House and Barrington Court add even more charm. These quiet, off-the-beaten-path spots leave a lasting impression.
When you go on holiday yourself, can you switch off, or do you find yourself taking notes for your own place?
I’ve finally learned to switch off something I could never do in my old job! When we go away, we truly enjoy the break. That said, I’m always on the lookout for clever ideas or thoughtful touches to bring back. Meanwhile, the dairy farm runs smoothly thanks to our amazing children, Lucy and Jack, who keep everything ticking over.
What do you most like to find in a welcome basket when you arrive somewhere new?
I’m not too fussy it’s always just lovely to see what hosts have thoughtfully put together. The little personal touches are what make it special.
