Overview
Situated at the north-western tip of Holy Island in Anglesey in North Wales, Holyhead Breakwater is some 1.7 miles (2.7 km) long, and the longest Breakwater in Europe.
It’s a popular spot for dog walkers and fishermen, who are often seen rods in hand on the lower wall waiting patiently for their catch of the day, their simple endeavours in stark contrast to the huge ferries passing by heading from Holyhead to Ireland.
For the history lovers, work started on the breakwater in 1845 but wasn’t fully completed until 28 years later when it was officially opened on the 19th August 1873. It took 7 million tonnes of rock in total, most of which came from nearby Holyhead Mountain.
If you want to make a day of it, combine your walk along the breakwater with a stroll through Holyhead Breakwater Country Park. Amble around pretty Llyn Llwynog, indulge in some seal spotting from The Rocky Coast and stop for a drink or a bite to eat at Caffi’r Parc.

There are no opening hours as such, but you’ll want to be mindful of fading light when walking along the breakwater, and also steer clear of bad weather.
