Shimmering lochs and verdant forest are only made more magical by the dramatic backdrop of the Cairngorm mountains. And best of all, you don’t need to haul yourself up a mountain to see it – simply follow the two mile, waymarked forestry trail.

Overview
There are two routes to choose from when you park at the Uath Lochans Forestry car park. The first is a short walk of just over a mile which visits the lochans themselves: look out for dragonflies dancing over the surface of the water in the summer months. The second walk is the slightly more strenuous route up Farleitter Crag, with that view. The panorama from the top is more than worth the effort if you ask us. And at only two and a half miles, you’ll have plenty of time to sit and admire the view.
If you fancy a longer hike, there are plenty of opportunities to extend your walk. Forestry tracks connect the lochans with Inshriach Forest, where canine companions will have a blast splashing in the shallows of Loch Insh. Take your paddle board and launch from Loch Insh Outdoor Centre (small launch fee) or hire a paddle board, canoe or kayak from the centre.
Alternatively, take a stroll along the river in Glen Feshie, making sure to keep an eye out for the ospreys who fish in the river during the summer months. If you’re feeling really energetic, the forest is also one of the starting locations for Sgor Gaòith (‘the peak of the winds’), another iconic Cairngorms viewpoint and a good Munro for beginners.
Whatever you decide on, you’ll be left wanting to come back and explore more of the area. The shady pines and scampering red squirrels lend the Uath Lochans an air of simultaneous wildness and tranquility, an equilibrium which is the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The Area
The Cairngorms National Park is one of the best places to visit with your dog, with miles of woodland trails and dozens of fresh water lochs. A bit further afield, the Landmark Forest Adventure Park is another great option for a family day out. The park has a fantastic range of attractions and dogs on leads are very welcome in outside areas, including the Treetop Trail and the Pinewood Grill restaurant. If you prefer quiet wanders, Ellan Wood is right next door and is perfect for a quiet stroll.
