Overview
At 3 miles long and 1 mile wide, the lake offers a variety of walks for all abilities. A boat trip across the lake followed by a stroll around the shore to a dog friendly pub might be right up your street, or perhaps the shorter Miles without Stiles walk to Friar’s Crag could be better suited. Whatever your preference, you’ll not be disappointed with what the lake has to offer.
Most walks begin and end at Keswick Launch, where you can explore the lake via a boat ride or hire your own boat – both activities are dog friendly. However, to really appreciate the beauty of Derwentwater, we recommend the full circular – a waymarked path taking you on a scenic 10-mile walk around the lake.
Amble through ancient woodland, along the shores of the lake and into the picturesque village of Portinscale before heading back to the bustling town of Keswick. You won’t be able to resist stopping at every given opportunity to admire the breathtaking views along the way. On clear, sunny days the lake appears to emulate a mirror with its crystal-clear reflections, and your pooches will welcome a paddle or a swim.
If you’re looking to a take a halfway break, stop at the magnificent Ladore Falls Hotel & Spa for a refreshing drink or bite to eat. Make sure you treat the dogs to one of their famous doggie dinners. Your pooch will be your best friend forever!
For The Dogs
Be aware that in some parts of the circular walk you could encounter livestock. Water-loving dogs will adore splashing in the lake. However, keep an eye out for blue-green algae signs, especially in the summer months.

There are several pay and display carparks in Keswick, the closest to Derwentwater being Lakeside car park.

Keswick, awarded ‘most dog friendly town’ three years in a row by the Kennel Club, offers oodles of places to eat and drink with your pooches. Nestled between the impressive bulk of Skiddaw and the beauty of Derwentwater, it is one of the most visited market towns in the Northern Lakes. You can spend hours here browsing the many shops with your four-legged friend, having a round of crazy golf at Hope Park Games and Café or even visiting the Puzzling Place, an optical illusion experience and fun for all the family – including the dog! We recommend stopping by The Dog and Gun and giving their beef and ale pie a try.
