Good to know

Overview

The easy walk starts in a wooded glen before crossing open moorland, then there’s a final steep descent where care is needed to reach the Falls of Kirkaig. The water tumbles over a drop of nearly 20 metres into the pool below, making them quite the sight. Visitors in summer might even see a salmon or two trying to jump up the falls.

The best viewing point is about three quarters of the way down the rocky path, before returning back the way you came. Don’t be surprised if you round a corner and find yourself face to face with a red deer – they are plentiful in this part of the world!

Signs asking for dogs to be kept on leads should be respected, but water loving pooches will appreciate the opportunity to have a paddle in the river at the start and end of the walk.

For The Dogs

Take a tick hook along with you as deer are plentiful in the area. Treats and poop bags are a backpack staple!

Opening Hours

There are no opening hours as such, but daylight is recommended.

Parking

Park at Inverkirkaig car park. The nearest post code is IV27 4LR.

The Area

Part of the North West Highlands Geopark, Assynt is one of Scotland’s best outdoor adventure playgrounds; a land of lochs, lofty peaks and undeniable, extraordinary beauty. It’s worth taking the time to explore this area for more than a few days – there’s so much waiting to be discovered. If you’re feeling energetic, why not tackle one of the area’s many spectacular peaks, from the small but steep Stac Pollaidh to the instantly recognisable Suilven? For panoramic views with slightly less effort, wander along the River Inver, or take a trip to the lighthouse at Stoer and amble along the cliffs. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Isle of Harris!
